Gapstow Bridge by Regina Geoghan

Central Park Gapstow Bridge Autumn

Gapstow Bridge in Central Park is one of the most well known and most viisted and photographed of the bridges in the park. Located in the SouthEast corner of the park, it spans the Central Park Pond. Gapstow Bridge was originally built in 1874, designed by Jacob Wrey Mould. The wooden bridge with cast iron railings did not hold up to weather and usage and in 1896 was replaced with the current schist stone span. The current Gapstow Bridge was designed by Howard & Caudwell. It stands 12 feet high and is 76 feet in length. During summer months the bridge is covered with green vines and in this image one can see a residue of the vine in autumn red color. This image shows the Gapstow Bridge from a norhwest looking view framed in peak autumn foliage.
